I’ve never spent a summer at one of those classic camps you can see in books and movies, but I’ve read so many books about summer camps that sometimes I almost feel nostalgic for an experience I’ve never actually had. That’s the magic of a great story, isn’t it? It can make you miss a place you’ve never been.
So, if you’re now thinking of lakeside cabins, campfire nights, lifelong friendships, or the kind of mysteries that only seem to happen deep in the woods, and can’t wait to escape into that world for a few hours, these are the stories I’d recommend picking up first.

From Campfire Friendships to Dark Summer Secrets
The God of the Woods
by Liz Moore
If you are looking for a summer camp book that would make an incredible book club pick, start with this one. Set at a prestigious Adirondack summer camp in the 1970s, the story begins when thirteen-year-old Barbara Van Laar disappears without a trace. The case immediately sends shockwaves through the community, not only because Barbara comes from the family that owns the camp, but also because her older brother vanished years earlier and was never found. Thus, what starts as a missing-person mystery becomes a fascinating story about privilege, family dynamics, secrets, and the stories people tell themselves to survive.
This was one of my favorite book club picks for the Comet Circle because there’s so much to discuss and so many connections that keep you guessing. Every character seems to be hiding something, the atmosphere is incredibly immersive, and the mystery kept me guessing and hooked until the end.
The Last Time I Lied
by Riley Sager
Another chilling summer camp thriller, this time from a favorite author. Emma Davis returns to Camp Nightingale, fifteen years after three girls from her cabin vanished without a trace. Back as a painting instructor, she’s determined to uncover what really happened that night in the woods. But as old clues resurface and unsettling new threats emerge, Emma realizes the camp is still hiding dangerous secrets, and the closer she gets to the truth, the more she risks becoming the next victim of a mystery that was never truly buried.
