Amy Sue Nathan
Q. Describe yourself with three adjectives.
A. Kind, Funny, Intuitive
Q. Choose three adjectives for your last novel, Left to Chance.
A. Hopeful, Thoughtful, Romantic
Q.What was the hardest part about writing your latest book?
A. Left to Chance takes place over about a nine-day timespan so that hardest part was getting all the events and emotions into just about a week and a half.
Q. Who was your favorite character to write and why?
A. I loved writing Beck, Cameron, and Simon, and making sure they were distinct and realistic. I’d never written so many important male characters into one of my novels before.
Q.Is there a genre you want to experiment with?
A. I’d love to write magical realism and I’ve puttered around with a couple of story ideas.
Q. If you could be one of your characters for a day, who would it be and why?
A. I am my characters. Yep, all of them. I know what they’re thinking and doing, their backstories and motivations, even if they’re not the main character. They might not embody me, but I do embody them on a daily basis!
Q. What is the most difficult part of your writing?
A. BIC, which means Butt In Chair! Once I get myself started I’m really okay.
Q. What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?
A. I love hearing that a reader wishes she could be friends with the characters in the book. Feeling like that is what made me what to write fiction.
Q. Where do you see yourself in ten years?
A. At 53 I try not to think about being 63, quite frankly. I just hope I get there!
Q. Could you share a happy photo of you and tell us more about that moment?
This photo was taken February 2, 1977, the night of my Bat Mitzvah. I’m opening the gift from my paternal grandparents. Can you guess what it was? My first typewriter!

Amy Sue Nathan has been blogging since 2006 and launched the Women’s Fiction Writers blog in March 2011. She teaches workshops for Writers Digest University and freelance as a fiction editor and writing coach. She’s also a book coach with Author Accelerator and trained in the Story Genius method. Her stories and essays have appeared in print and online in over two dozen publications such as The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Parent, Writer’s Digest, Huffington Post, and online in New York Times and Washington Post blogs.
She was born and raised in Philadelphia and is a graduate of Temple University with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. She grew up in Philadelphia where she now lives. In addition to being a writer, editor, and blogger, she’s also the proud mom of two grown children (her favorite oxymoron), vegetarian, a dog-lover, not-so-secret crafter, and lover of all things wine and chocolate.
Her third novel, LEFT TO CHANCE, has been published by St. Martin’s Griffin on November 21, 2017. Her debut novel, THE GLASS WIVES, was published by St. Martin’s Griffin on May 14, 2013 and THE GOOD NEIGHBOR was published on October 15, 2015.
