Her Fake Engagement

by Gigi Garrett

⭐⭐⭐⭐

With Her Fake Engagement, Gigi Garrett has created a short, funny, and nice reading story playing with an intriguing title.

“No artists, no smokers, no men with beards … Manhattan real estate broker Lottie Langerman feels confident that if she follows her long list of dating rules, she’ll meet The One and her life will unfold exactly as planned. Everything changes when her best friend decides to throw a fake bachelorette party—just to see what all the fuss is about—and Lottie reluctantly agrees to play the role of bride-to-be for a night.

Faking an engagement turns out to be more fun—and trouble—than Lottie could have imagined. Not only does her dream man think she’s taken, but Lottie keeps running into bearded Brooklyn jewelry designer Tyler, who breaks every single one of her rules … yet manages to get under her skin like no one else. Soon, Lottie finds herself at a crossroads where she must decide: Play it safe—or ditch the rules and follow her heart?

***

Her Fake Engagement starts with Lottie, a Manhattan real estate broker, who loves to play by the rules, otherwise, she feels unhinged.

She thinks she has everything under control, and she aims to strictly follow these rules also in her love life, but she has not considered her best friend Elsa May and her bizarre idea to fake a series of bachelorette parties, trying to escape from her ordinary life as a stay at home mum.

During their first party, Lottie meets Tyler, and even if there was immediately a connection between them, she chose to ignore it.

“It’s funny how even in our jaded, high-divorce-rate society, everyone believes that love is this cosmic thing, and you have no idea what type of person you’re going to end up with. That’s how people get into trouble. I believe you have to be as calculated when it comes to relationships as you are with everything else in life. You have to know what you want before you find it. And never compromise.”

Only realizing the emptiness of a relationship based exclusively on some ideal rules, could help our girl discover the “Funny Lottie”, the girl who hopes to madly fall in love without the fear of being hurt again.

So, after all, maybe Tyler could be the right one, even if doesn’t meet any of her rules.

“No guy is perfect, after all. Or maybe that’s what makes people perfect— their flaws.”

In Her Fake Engagement, I appreciated the author’s style of writing and the idea behind the title. As I read “fake engagement” I imagined a fake relationship in order to get something like an inheritance, but this plot has pleasantly surprised me. Finally, I think the characters are developed proportionally to the length and the message of this book.

“Maybe everything good is found only when you color outside the lines.”

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
